A common question we are frequently asked is what are the benefits of microcement over polished concrete? From our experience, these are some of the key advantages;
More Control of Colour & Finish
There is generally much more control in colour, tone, texture, and overall aesthetics with Microcement than a polished concrete finish due to the method of application and control over products and pigment measurements.
Low Applied Thickness
The products can be applied from only 2-3mm in depth (exclusive of any preparation needs), which is much less than that of a polished concrete floor which is usually a minimum of 100mm.
Multiple Uses & Applications
Due to the application process, Microcements can be applied on walls, floors, ceilings and any other stable substrate in both domestic and commercial environments.
Less Heavy / Noisy Machinery
Heavy and noisy grinding and diamond polishing tools are not generally required. Therefore, applying these products in areas where a traditional polished concrete floor would not have been possible previously is generally possible.
Fast Drying / Installation Time
The application time required for a microcement finished floor is significantly reduced compared to that of a polished concrete surface. A standard installation would typically take 4-5 days (which may differ depending on size and complexity).
Installation Timing Flexibility
Due to the reduced installation time requirements, a microcement installation could be undertaken towards the end of a project, thus reducing the possibility of damage/compromise resulting from third parties or other trades. For example, installation could take place once a kitchen has been installed.
Retro Fitting / Installation Possibilities
Microcements, in many cases, can be retrofitted, meaning that as long as the substrates are stable, they can be applied over many existing floor finishes with minimal height build-ups or excavation of existing substrates.
Less Cracking
Microcements, by their nature, are less prone to cracking than that of a polished concrete floor. In general, new substrates should be installed correctly, cured, dried with any UFH fully commissioned before installing the micro cement and any underfloor heating commissioning undertaken in advance, thus reducing the possibility of cracking significantly.
